There are placement figures to analyse, rankings to compare, campuses to visit, specialisations to consider, and opinions coming from almost everyone – friends, family, alumni, and of course, social media. In the middle of all this information overload, it is easy to reduce the decision to two questions – what is the highest package and what is the ranking. Both are relevant, but neither of these tells you the complete story.

The better question to ask is: “What will this Business School help me to become in the next two years?”

An MBA is not merely a qualification. Done well, it should change the way you think, communicate, solve problems, work with people and respond to uncertain situations. Therefore, while evaluating MBA colleges in India, the following factors are worth examining:

Look Beyond the Curriculum – Examine How You Will Learn

The real differentiator is often not what is taught but how it is taught. Managers work with ambiguity, competing priorities, and imperfect information. The pedagogy, therefore, should develop the ability to think rather than simply reproduce knowledge. So, ask whether you will primarily listen to lectures or will be expected to analyse, debate and make decisions through case-based learning or simulations.

At ICFAI Business School (IBS), for example, case-based learning has long been an integral part of management education. Students are placed in business situations where they must analyse alternatives, defend recommendations and learn that there may not always be one “correct” answer.

Ask How Closely the Classroom is Connected to Industry

Management education cannot operate in isolation from the industry. Technology is changing jobs faster than the traditional curricula can change. Artificial intelligence, analytics, automation, digital transformation, ESG and new customer behaviours are transforming functions ranging from finance and marketing to HR and operations. Therefore, a good B-school needs a continuous interface with industry and not merely an occasional guest lecture.

So, look for evidence of corporate interactions, industry-led workshops, leadership talks, live projects, internships, mentoring, practitioner sessions, and other opportunities to interact with business leaders.

At IBS, for instance, our interactions with recruiters and industry professionals continually lead our student-development initiatives. In addition to the management curriculum, students have opportunities to build contemporary capabilities through interventions in areas such as AI and automation, financial modelling, ESG, data visualisation and Power BI, among others.

Don’t Just Ask about Placements; Ask about Placement Preparation

Placement numbers are important, as they provide information about an institution’s corporate reach and career outcomes. But equally important is the answer to a question – what happens before placement day? Find out how early the B-school begins preparing students for careers. Does it start a few weeks before interviews, or is employability developed throughout the programme in the form of communication, resume building, GD preparation, mock interviews, mentoring and feedback?

At IBS, career development is supported through a dedicated Career Management Centre and sustained corporate engagement. The emphasis is not simply on bringing recruiters to campus, but also on preparing students to engage meaningfully with those opportunities.

Examine the Quality and Diversity of Corporate Opportunities

Students are naturally attracted by the highest package. It makes a good headline, but it should never be the only parameter used to evaluate a B-school. Ask the following: Which sectors recruit from the institution? What kind of roles are offered? How diverse is the recruiter base? Are opportunities available across functions and specialisations? Does the institution have sustained relationships with recruiters, or does its recruiter list change substantially every year? This will give you a deeper understanding of the quality and diversity of the hiring opportunities.

IBS currently engages with a large corporate ecosystem spanning sectors such as banking, financial services, consulting, IT/ITES, insurance, FMCG, manufacturing, healthcare, construction, hospitality, e-commerce and many others. Such diversity gives students exposure to different industries, functions and career possibilities.

Look Carefully at the Internship Experience

For MBA students, an internship is their first opportunity to experience an organisation from the inside and to work with managers – deadlines, customers, data and real business problems. So, while comparing MBA colleges, examine how internships are sourced, monitored and evaluated. Find out the internship duration and whether students receive faculty and corporate monitoring, and whether the internship is integrated with their overall career development.

Find Out Whether the Institution is Preparing Students for an AI-Enabled Workplace

Today’s MBA student will graduate into a workplace where AI will increasingly assist with research, analysis, forecasting, content creation, customer interaction, reporting and decision support. When choosing an MBA programme, examine whether technology is treated as a separate subject or embedded into the broader management learning experience. Contextualising AI in a domain helps students understand AI usage in their domain much better and helps them integrate AI into their workflow later.

Consider the Alumni Network You are Joining

Your relationship with your B-school can last decades. A strong alumni network provides much more than placement contacts. Alumni can become mentors, recruiters, industry connectors, entrepreneurs, collaborators and sources of career guidance. Therefore, look at both the size and engagement of the alumni community. Ask whether alumni return for industry discussions, mentoring and institutional initiatives.

IBS today has a network of more than 79,000 alumni. For a prospective student, this represents something larger than a statistic – it represents a professional community that extends well beyond the classroom and beyond the two years of the programme.

Evaluate the Ecosystem, Not Just the Infrastructure

Buildings alone do not create managers. Some of the most valuable lessons during an MBA happen outside formal classes – while organising conferences, resolving conflict within a team, making a presentation, interacting with senior executives or taking responsibility for an outcome.

Therefore, look at the ecosystem within those buildings. Are students encouraged to organise events? Can they lead clubs and committees? Do they participate in competitions? Are there opportunities to interact with people from different backgrounds? Can they experiment, fail, receive feedback, and try again?

Calculate ROI More Broadly

An MBA involves a substantial investment of money and two valuable years of your life. But the return from an MBA should not be measured only by comparing the first salary with the programme fee. Consider what else you are gaining: managerial knowledge, professional skills, internships, industry exposure, certifications, confidence, friendship, mentors and an alumni network that may remain relevant throughout your career.

Your first job matters. Your career trajectory matters more.

Finally, Ask Whether You Can See Yourself Growing There

After analysing rankings, curriculum, placements, faculty, industry exposure, infrastructure and fees, there is still one final consideration: fit. So, speak to alumni and students, visit the campus if possible, attend admission interactions or selection briefings. Ask questions.

And then ask yourself:

Will it expose me to opportunities I do not have today?

Will I be encouraged to take responsibility for my own development?

And when I graduate two years later, will I be significantly more capable than the person who entered?

That is ultimately what management education should accomplish.

Choosing an MBA Is Choosing a Transformation

There is no universally “best” MBA college. However, there may be a B-school that is better suited to your aspirations, abilities and career goals.

So, while researching management colleges and preparing for MBA admission, don’t choose merely on the basis of a ranking, an advertisement or one placement number. Examine the complete ecosystem – academics, pedagogy, faculty, industry engagement, internships, career preparation, technology exposure, alumni and opportunities for personal growth.

At IBS, our endeavour has been to connect these elements through case-based learning, industry engagement, internships, skill development, career preparation and a large corporate and alumni ecosystem.

For students considering IBS, IBSAT is one of the gateways to the nine IBS campuses and the two-year full-time MBA/PGPM programmes.

But whichever institution you finally choose, make the decision like a manager: gather evidence, look beyond the obvious numbers, understand your priorities and think long term.

Because the most important outcome of an MBA is not the degree you receive at the end of two years. It is the professional you become in the process.

Dr. Manisha Singh Deputy Director, Corporate Relations ICFAI Business School (IBS) Bengaluru Choosing an MBA college can be one of the first important management decisions a student can make.
