How do MBA Scholarships Work? A Guide for MBA Aspirants
Dr. Reenu Kalani, Associate Dean, IBS Gurgaon
âAn MBA is my dream, but the fees are my biggest concern.â
If this sounds like a conversation youâve had with yourself or with your parents, youâre not alone. The cost of an MBA is an important consideration for many aspirants. But before you let the fees influence your MBA plans, it is worth understanding how MBA scholarships work.
MBA admission is a significant investment in yourself and your future, and MBA scholarships can significantly help in easing the financial burden of attending an MBA program. Students often face financial challenges while pursuing higher education. Scholarships are an incredible source of funding for higher education.
Upon hearing the word âscholarships,â we start to believe they are only available for academic achievers. But thatâs just one of the myths about scholarships, as there are different types of scholarships available that can provide financial aid.
So, letâs understand how MBA scholarships work. What are the eligibility criteria, and does doing well in an MBA entrance test improve your chances of receiving one?
What is an MBA Scholarship?
An MBA scholarship is financial support offered by a business school to eligible students. The amount and criteria vary from one institution to another. Scholarships can be awarded on the basis of several factors, including:
- Academic performance
- MBA entrance test scores
- Merit
- Leadership and extracurricular achievements
- Overall profile
- Other criteria specified by the business school
For merit-based scholarships, a strong performance in an entrance examination can certainly help.
Most students prepare for an MBA entrance test with admission as their primary goal. However, a good score can sometimes offer an additional advantage when scholarships are linked to entrance test performance.
This does not mean that a high score automatically guarantees a scholarship. Business schools may consider several factors, and the final criteria depend on the scholarship policy of the institution.
This is why students should approach entrance test preparation with both goals in mind: securing admission and, where applicable, keeping themselves eligible for merit-based opportunities.

Scholarships Are Your Lifeline to an Affordable College Education
The ICFAI Business School Scholarship
With the aim of rewarding academic excellence and providing financial assistance to deserving candidates, encouraging diversity and inclusivity within the student community, IBS has announced âš10 crore worth of scholarships, comprising 500 scholarships of âš2 lakh each. These scholarships are open to candidates applying for the MBA/PGPM 2027-29 programme and taking the IBSAT test in December 2026, and are also extended to candidates applying through CAT/XAT/NMAT by GMAC⢠or GMAT⢠scores.
What is IBSAT?
IBSAT is the entrance test conducted by the ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education for admission to the MBA/PGPM programmes at IBS.
One of the advantages for candidates is that a single IBSAT application allows them to apply to nine IBS campuses. Students can also apply through valid CAT, XAT, NMAT by GMAC or GMAT scores, as applicable.
IBSAT 2026 assesses candidates in four areas: Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude, and Data Adequacy & Interpretation. The test consists of 140 questions across 4 sections to be attempted in 120 minutes. The pattern is as follows:
| Section | Title | No. of Questions |
| I | Verbal Ability | 50 |
| II | Reading Comprehension | 30 |
| III | Quantitative Aptitude | 30 |
| IV | Data Adequacy & Interpretation | 30 |
| Total | 140 |
How to Prepare for Scholarships?
There is no fixed formula for earning a merit-based scholarship; what matters the most is building a strong profile.
1. Give your entrance test your best shot
Get familiar with the exam format, practise consistently and focus on improving your accuracy and time management. Regular preparation can help you perform with greater confidence on test day.
2. Build a strong academic record
Your academic journey can play an important role in scholarship selection. If academic performance is part of the criteria, your school and graduation marks can strengthen your profile.
3. Check the scholarship requirements
Every scholarship comes with its own set of rules. Go through the eligibility criteria carefully and check the application process, required documents and any conditions you need to fulfil. Read the scholarship guidelines carefully, as eligibility requirements and conditions differ across institutions.
4. Don’t miss the deadlines
Keep a record of both admission and scholarship deadlines. They may not always fall on the same date, and missing a deadline could mean losing out on a scholarship opportunity.
An entrance test is not just an admissions filter. A good score can also open the door to valuable scholarship opportunities. The important thing to remember is that every business school has its own scholarship policy. Some scholarships may be linked to entrance-test performance, while others may consider academic achievements or a combination of factors.
For an MBA aspirant, the financial support through scholarships can make a meaningful difference to the total cost of pursuing a management program. However, it is important to carefully review the scholarship guidelines, as the eligibility requirements, award structure and applicable conditions can differ from one business school to another.
So, if youâre preparing for an MBA entrance test, remember that your preparation can do more than help you secure admission. It could also open the door to scholarship opportunities. So, prepare well, understand the eligibility criteria and keep an eye on important deadlines.
Your MBA journey can begin with a good score and become more affordable with the right scholarship.
Best wishes to all the aspirants!
